A BUTTERO (a tuscan cowboy)

The cowboy usually rides the Maremma horse. The characteristic saddles are the bardella, especially in Lazio, the scafarda in Tuscany and the saddle with the pallino. 

The buttero's clothing consists of moleskin breeches, leg loops, a velvet jacket and a black hat. He protects himself from the rain with a large cloak, called pastràno (reminiscent of the poncho - or poncio - of the gauchos). In his hand he holds the mazzarella, a stick used to stimulate oxen and horses.
